This album was recorded in New York by Johnny Griffin from late 1961 to early 1962 and released by Riverside in 1962.
It is a unique attempt to reconstruct traditional folk songs from England, America, and Scotland into jazz,
and the improvisation and performance skills of Griffin result in a fresh and attractive finish.
In "The Kerry Dancers" and "Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair,"
while respecting the simple melodies, swing and bebop sensibilities are infused,
resulting in a compelling development. The performance features the talented trio of Barry Harris (p), Ron Carter (b), and Ben Riley (ds),
who support the work with their solid groove and technique.
In addition, original songs such as "25 Daze" and "Ballad for Monsieur" are also included.
This is an unusual but highly-regarded masterpiece that elevates folk songs into modern jazz.
