This is a stunning example of early 20th-century folk art. Dating to the 1910s or 1920s, this wooden handkerchief box features intricate pyrography—also known as "poker work"—where designs were burned into the wood by hand.
The lid showcases two bold, hand-painted red poppies flanking the word "Handkerchiefs." The vibrant red pigment has aged beautifully, developing a fine "alligator" patina that authenticates its century-old history. During the Edwardian era, these boxes were popular domestic crafts, often sold as kits for women to finish at home, making each surviving piece a unique slice of social history.
The sides are decorated with a textured stippled pattern, and the lid fits snugly over the base. Whether used for its original purpose or as a vanity catch-all, it’s a perfect addition to a Cottagecore or Art Nouveau collection.
Era: Circa 1900–1920
Dimensions: Approx. 7" x 7" x 2.5"
Condition: Good antique condition. Expected age-appropriate wear including minor edge scuff.
